ADOPT Caribbean: Soil Health for Climate-Resilient Agriculture

Start Date: 15/12/2025
End Date: 15/06/2026

Description

IICA multicountry project, institutional code 5592-00, implemented in Guyana, Jamaica, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to accelerate the demonstration, adoption and scaling of soil-health-based climate-smart agricultural practices. It combined demonstration plots, practice validation, farmer and extension-officer training, technical assistance, and soil and greenhouse-gas baseline information. Interventions focused on rice in Guyana, yam and forage in Jamaica, and sweet pepper and maize in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Practices included alternate wetting and drying in rice, compost and organic amendments, mulching, minimum tillage, cover cropping and nutrient management. The Government of New Zealand supported the project through NZCSA-LAC as part of its contribution to the GRA, with administration through the Ag Emissions Centre and BSI as IICA's institutional counterpart. AGROSAVIA, PISLM, GRDB, CARDI and national agricultural authorities participated in technical activities. An ADOPT input and equipment handover after project closure was documented in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Expected results include healthier soils, climate resilience, lower emissions, sustainable-practice adoption, and capacity to measure emissions and inform public decisions. No quantified reduction in emissions is recorded as a proven project result.

Observations

IDENTITY: 5592-00 is the IICA project code, not a PAESA initiative_id. SCOPE: this record covers the IICA-administered regional project, not the CCRAF workshop on 30 September 2026. DATES: the IICA administrative system reports 15 December 2025-15 June 2026 and total resources of USD 329,015. The NZCSA page gives August 2025-June 2026; the Guyana launch article refers to 2 March 2026. This start-date discrepancy is preserved here; the precise administrative dates for 5592-00 are selected, without claiming any additional contractual date. A July 2026 closure announcement confirms completion. The August handover took place after closure and does not establish a contractual extension. BUDGET: USD 329,015 is the total documented by IICA, not necessarily the exclusive New Zealand contribution. The launch article rounds this to USD 330,000. The USD 50,000 announced for Guyana and unquantified co-funding are not added. Published currency USD; exchange_rate=1. Unquantified additional counterpart=NULL; no verified annual allocation: year_allocation=0, years_count=NULL, annual_average_budget=NULL. CO-FUNDING: NZCSA names IICA, the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Ministry of Agriculture, Agro-Invest Ltd (Jamaica), and Guyana Livestock Development Board. The last two names are not automatically mapped to other legal entities. IICA and Ministry contributions have an unspecified financing type (9) and no extra amounts. The Ag Emissions Centre is an administrator, not a second donor; BSI is not replaced by AgResearch or GRA. FRAMEWORKS: the project source explicitly links Guyana's LCDS; the script searches only for LCDS 2030. The reference to 25 by 2025 plus five requires formal version identification; the earlier 25 by 2025 is not substituted. NZCSA-LAC and GRA are documented as cooperation context, not created as frames. Only the three beneficiary countries are assigned. El Nino tags/rooms and equipment under the separate Living Labs 2025-FoHRSA project are excluded.
