Caribbean: 61% El Niño probability threatens crops

61% probability is estimated by WMO that El Niño will bring severe droughts to Belize, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago, threatening crops and water supplies in countries already facing high imported food prices due to the Iran conflict (The Guardian, 2026).

In 2023, the relative internal productivity of the Agriculture sector in Latin America and the Caribbean was 44 (with total productivity coefficient = 100), showing its lag compared to sectors with higher productivity, according to the sectoral graph of the report (ECLAC, 2025).

Key pillars include: expanding farmer access to clean planting material of priority varieties; building productive resilience against drought, salinity, and the sweet potato weevil (Cylas formicarius); strengthening local value chains through public–private partnerships and processed product development (flour, animal feed); and integrating local varieties into the ITPGRFA Multilateral System, including safe duplication at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

J$149 Million Drought Mitigation Programme for Farmers in Jamaica

Jamaica's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining implemented a J$149 million drought mitigation programme to protect farmers from prolonged drought conditions. The programme includes trucking water to affected agricultural areas, constructing catchment ponds free of cost in areas used by farmer groups, and providing pond liners free of cost to individual farmers who undertake the excavation themselves. The intervention adopts a preventive approach to drought, improves agricultural water availability and storage, and reduces the vulnerability of agricultural production to dry climatic conditions.
