Next Generation Sweet Potato Production in the Caribbean (NextGenSP)
A regional project focused on the conservation and sustainable use of sweet potato plant genetic resources across Jamaica, Saint Lucia, and Antigua & Barbuda. Key pillars include: expanding farmer access to clean planting material of priority varieties; building productive resilience against drought, salinity, and the sweet potato weevil (Cylas formicarius); strengthening local value chains through public–private partnerships and processed product development (flour, animal feed); and integrating local varieties into the ITPGRFA Multilateral System, including safe duplication at the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
Climate adaptation project in Jamaica financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) with FAO support
A project approved by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for USD 50 million to strengthen the climate resilience of Jamaica's agricultural sector, with technical support from the FAO. The initiative aims to improve the adaptation of production systems to climate change through sustainable practices, natural resource management, and institutional strengthening.
CAF donates $800,000 to five Caribbean countries to mitigate the effects of Hurricane Beryl
The Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean announced the immediate delivery of donations for humanitarian aid and emergency assistance to affected communities in the Caribbean countries. The donations were distributed as follows: USD 250,000 for Jamaica; USD 250,000 for Barbados, existing CAF shareholder countries; USD 100,000 for Granada, which is in the process of becoming a shareholder; USD 100,000 for Saint Lucia; and USD 100,000 for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
