Model Law on Family Farming

Start Date: 2017
End Date: 2030

Description

Regional legal framework approved by the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) in 2017, establishing common principles, guidelines, and definitions to strengthen family farming as a cornerstone of food security, poverty reduction, and sustainable rural development. It seeks to guide Latin American and Caribbean states in the creation or harmonization of their national laws, promoting inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agri-food systems.

Observations

The Model Law is not binding, but serves as a legislative reference for national parliaments. It was developed with support from FAO and AMEXCID through the Mesoamerica without Hunger program. It is currently being implemented and has inspired national regulatory frameworks in several countries in the region.
