Capacity Building for Comprehensive Fruit Crop Development in the Rainforest Areas of Sandia and Carabaya (Puno)

Fecha de inicio: 05/02/2020
Fecha de fin: 2025

Description

The project strengthens the technical and organizational capacities of fruit farmers in Sandia and Carabaya (Puno) through technology transfer, participatory training programs (“Learning by Doing”), personalized technical assistance, and farmer field schools. It aims to improve competitiveness, sustainability, and market integration of smallholder fruit production systems for crops such as citrus, banana, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, and avocado.

Observations

The project is one of the main regional initiatives to position fruit growing as a driver of economic and social development in Puno. Its design combines practical training, technology transfer, and organizational strengthening, supporting the sustainability of family production units. However, it faces challenges such as limited transport and market infrastructure in the highland rainforest, and the need to ensure the long-term maintenance of demonstration modules and collection centers after project completion. Stronger alignment with national policies on family farming and value chain development will be essential to expand its impact in the medium and long term.
