New Field: Sustainable Livestock Farming in the Brazilian Amazon

Fecha de inicio: 2012
Fecha de fin: 2022

Description

The Novo Campo Program is an initiative led by the Instituto Centro de Vida (ICV) in the Brazilian Amazon that promotes a model of sustainable, deforestation-free cattle ranching. Implemented primarily in the state of Mato Grosso, the program aims to restore degraded pastures, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve cattle productivity through good agricultural practices, traceability systems, technical training, and private-sector partnerships. It has been funded by Fundo Vale, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, and Norad, with an estimated budget of €11.5 million, directly benefiting over 20 pilot farms and more than 34,000 heads of cattle under sustainable management.

Observations

The program demonstrates that profitable and environmentally responsible cattle ranching in the Amazon is possible through effective coordination among producers, the private sector, and technical institutions. However, its scalability depends on securing stable financial mechanisms and adapting the model to diverse socio-environmental contexts.
