Description

This project aims to improve food security and reduce the vulnerability of family farming to climate change through the sustainable intensification of horticulture in protected environments. Agriculture under these conditions allows more effective control of the microclimate, which optimizes photosynthesis and significantly increases crop productivity and quality compared to those grown in open fields. With funding from FONTAGRO, prototype models of protected horticulture structures will be developed and studies will be carried out to diagnose the opportunities and challenges of these systems in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). In addition, reports will be prepared on crop-environment interactions and recommendations will be made to promote sustainable intensification strategies. The project will also include dissemination and capacity building workshops for technicians, producers and academics, thus contributing to the scaling up of innovations in protected horticulture.
