2005 flood caused losses equal to 60% of GDP

The 2005 floods caused economic losses equivalent to approximately 60% of Guyana's GDP and affected nearly 37% of the population. Similar widespread flooding occurred during the first half of 2021, with some areas experiencing 120–150 centimetres of standing water for several days, causing extensive social and economic disruption.
