Description

Agricultural activity in Nicaragua accumulated a 2.5% decline during the first half of 2026, amid a rainfall deficit and the effects of the El Niño phenomenon. Activity fell by 2.4% in the first quarter and 2.9% in the second quarter. Nicaragua's dry corridor, comprising 44 municipalities, recorded impacts on maize, bean, sorghum, sugarcane and peanut crops. Small-scale and subsistence farmers faced crop losses, reduced income and risks to household food supplies. The article also reports difficulties affecting fisheries and livestock, along with increased exports of some vegetables to other Central American countries due to regional shortages and higher prices.
