Description
The multisectoral committee ENFEN confirmed that the El Niño phenomenon along the Peruvian coast has officially entered a moderate-intensity phase, expected to continue at least until August 2026. IMARPE detected subsurface sea temperature anomalies of up to 7-8°C above average off the northern coast (Paita), linked to the arrival of warm Kelvin waves and weakened coastal winds. One or two additional warm Kelvin waves are expected in June, followed by a cold wave between June and July that would partially offset the warming. The phenomenon is projected to continue until February 2027, with peak warming expected between November and December, though no intense rainfall is forecast for the June-August quarter.
