Description

The document "The Transition Towards a New Generation of Public Policies for Agrifood Systems" addresses the need to transform public policies for agrifood systems in response to a constantly changing global context. It identifies three key dimensions for policy design: environmental sustainability, bioeconomy, and the integration of agrifood systems, prioritizing evidence-based approaches, social inclusion, and effective governance. Moreover, it emphasizes the urgency of adopting strategies that are systemic, innovative, and adaptable to emerging challenges, such as climate change, food security, and opportunities in environmental services, all within a framework of sustainable and equitable development. The document also underscores the importance of adapting public institutional frameworks to ensure transformative governance. This involves reconfiguring ministries of agriculture and related agencies to assume more strategic roles, including planning, intersectoral coordination, and the provision of public goods. Additionally, it advocates for strengthening the technical and administrative capacities of these institutions, fostering better collaboration with private and social actors, and ensuring that agrifood systems can effectively and resiliently respond to the complexities of the current context.
