Description
The study seeks to evaluate the viability of agricultural insurance models in the region and provide recommendations for the implementation of agricultural insurance programs in CARICOM member countries. It was revealed that although there are no established agricultural insurance programs in these countries, the importance of agricultural insurance is recognized as an effective risk management tool to support agricultural producers after disastrous events. However, the diversity in agricultural production practices, crop mix, farm size and risk exposure means that a single regional agricultural insurance program or standard set of insurance products may not be suitable for all farmers' needs. Caribbean countries. Detailed analysis of Grenada and Guyana showed that both countries face significant challenges in terms of data availability and technical capacity. The study concluded that to develop successful agricultural insurance programs in the Caribbean region, several key steps are needed, including the collection and processing of agricultural data, the development of strategic plans, and the building of local technical capacity. CARICOM can play a crucial role in coordinating these activities at the regional level, facilitating data collection, sharing knowledge and providing technical support to governments and the insurance sector of member countries.
