On 21 September 2026, Suriname's Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (LVV) and the Suriname Poultry Sector Association (APSS) agreed on a joint response to avian influenza. The agreement followed an outbreak at a poultry farm in Paramaribo where more than 5,000 birds died. LVV had already activated immediate containment, surveillance and biosecurity measures. The response includes strengthening poultry-farm biosecurity, improving communication with the sector, encouraging immediate reporting of abnormal signs and increased mortality, conducting additional laboratory testing to determine whether the virus is highly or low pathogenic, assessing damages and considering support mechanisms for affected poultry farmers. The response is coordinated with the Ministry of Health, the National Coordination Centre for Disaster Management (NCCR), the Bureau of Public Health (BOG) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). No specific budget for this intervention is identified in the reviewed sources.
