Additional Allocation to RADA for the Construction of Water Catchment Points in Farming Areas of Jamaica

Start Date: 23/09/2026
End Date: N/A

Description

Additional Government of Jamaica allocation to the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) to construct water catchment and storage points in 25 high-yield farming areas. The intervention aims to harvest rainfall for later use in farming communities, improve agricultural water availability and strengthen producer resilience to drought and prolonged water deficits.

Observations

On 23 September 2026, the Jamaica Information Service reported that RADA had received an additional J$60 million to construct water catchment points in 25 high-yield farming areas. The measure forms part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining's national drought mitigation response. Previous measures included free water trucking, distribution of storage tanks and micro-irrigation kits and other forms of support. RADA had delivered approximately 1,900 loads of water across eight priority parishes: St. Thomas, Portland, St. Mary, Westmoreland, Clarendon, St. Catherine, St. Elizabeth and Manchester. The budget conversion uses the Bank of Jamaica selling rate of J$159.4575 per USD on 25 September 2026, producing an approximate value of USD 376,275.81.
