Scaling-up regenerative practices for the recovery and improvement of soils, biodiversity and associated ecosystem services in the Chilean agricultural sector

Start Date: 14/07/2026
End Date: 2030

Description

GEF project led by Chile's Ministry of Agriculture through ODEPA and INDAP, with technical assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and financing from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The initiative seeks to accelerate the transition of Chile's agricultural sector toward regenerative, competitive, resilient and sustainable production models by strengthening public policies and governance, developing innovative financing mechanisms, generating evidence through productive pilots, and improving information and local capacities. Pilots cover olive production, vineyards, fruit production, cereals, vegetables, dairy farming, beef cattle and sheep production on at least 40 farms across nine regions between Coquimbo and Aysén, covering 26,509 hectares.

Observations

The official ODEPA source published on July 14, 2026 reports a total investment of USD 39.2 million, including approximately USD 6.6 million from the GEF and USD 32.5 million in national public and private co-financing. These figures are rounded. The official GEF Project ID 11220 record reports a GEF Project Grant of USD 5,966,207, GEF Agency Fees of USD 536,959 and co-financing of USD 32,588,651. To remain consistent with the primary OPSAa source, this script uses the figures communicated by ODEPA. The project is expected to run for five years from 2026 to 2030 and targets 26,509 hectares under regenerative management, mitigation of 1.87 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent over twenty years, 2,170 direct beneficiaries with at least 40 percent women, and validated evidence in eight productive sectors across nine regions.
