Strengthening the Management of the Punta Morada Potato Complex in the Andean Region

Start Date: 2025
End Date: 2028

Description

This project seeks to address the Punta Morada Potato Complex (PMPC), one of the most destructive potato pests in the Andean Region (Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Chile). It focuses on three components: regional diagnosis, optimization of molecular detection protocols, and dissemination of knowledge for PMPC management. It involves more than 2,100 people directly trained and more than 9,000 total beneficiaries.

Observations

Although the project generated valuable knowledge on managing the purple top disease complex, it faced challenges in establishing a coordinated regional surveillance and response system, which limited its capacity for prevention at an inter-institutional level.
