Sustainable North Amazonian Cocoa

Fecha de inicio: 2019
Fecha de fin: 2022

Description

Sustainable North Amazonian Cacao is an initiative implemented by APPCACAO with the support of the Swiss Cooperation Agency (SECO) through the SeCompetitivo program in the regions of Piura, San Martín, Amazonas, and Tumbes. It was implemented between July 2019 and February 2022, with a total budget of USD 1,852,300, including a national counterpart of USD 902,300. The project strengthened the competitiveness and sustainability of organic cacao through technical assistance, cadmium mitigation, agroforestry systems, access to international markets, and improved cooperative management. It directly benefited more than 2,000 producers organized into 10 cooperatives, also promoting financial education and the inclusion of youth and women.

Observations

The project presents a solid and coordinated intervention that comprehensively addresses the main challenges facing the cocoa sector in the northern Amazon rainforest, combining technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and institutional strengthening. However, its limited territorial scope and relatively short duration could restrict long-term sustainability if technical and financial continuity is not ensured.
