Sustainable Production Program

This program is part of axis 3 Productivity and Sustainability of the Sectoral Plan of the Public Policy of the Costa Rican Agricultural Sector 2023-2027. It seeks to strengthen agricultural production systems by promoting agro-environmental and organic production practices. Its objective is to encourage producers to adopt good agricultural and livestock practices, while recognizing the environmental benefits of organic production. These incentives will be provided through programs that offer technical assistance and economic benefits, promoting production models adapted to climate change. Priority value chains, such as sugar cane, musaceae and rice. The construction of biofactories is also planned, with the goal of establishing 41 throughout the country between 2023 and 2027. These biofactories seek to promote the use of sustainable technologies and improve the capacities of producers and technicians in agro-environmental management. Through these, it is hoped to improve soil health, ensure food safety and reduce production costs, while facilitating access to sustainable bio-inputs. This component also allows for the transfer of knowledge, strengthening the agricultural sector and contributing to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. Likewise, the development of a pilot for an Agroclimatic Technical Roundtable (MTA) together with an Early Warning System (SAT) in the cantons of Guatuso, Los Chiles and Upala has been planned. This system will provide producers with accurate climate information, allowing them to better prepare for adverse weather conditions.
