Groundwater Resources Research, Preservation and Management Program

The Program is part of axis 3 Productivity and Sustainability of the Sectoral Plan of the Public Policy of the Costa Rican Agricultural Sector 2023-2027, which seeks to update and carry out hydrogeological studies at the national level to generate detailed information on the status, availability, quantity and quality of groundwater. This information is crucial to protect and plan the sustainable use of the resource, thus supporting the country's water and food security. The intervention is designed to prioritize integrated water management, which is essential to improve resilience to climate change and strengthen territorial planning in various productive sectors. The public value of the program lies in its ability to contribute to the competitiveness of productive sectors, facilitating a more efficient and safe use of groundwater. By providing accurate information, the program not only helps avoid economic losses for producers, but also reduces risks associated with water availability. Success indicators include the publication of new hydrogeological studies and their effective use in territorial planning, which allows the information generated to have a direct impact on decision-making for water resource management.
