Guyana Coastal Adaptation and Resilience Project

The objective of the project is to enhance climate adaptation and reduce flood risk in urban and rural areas in the coastal plain of Guyana. The project is comprised of three main components. The first component focuses on the improvement of drainage infrastructure. This includes critical repairs to existing gates, significant rehabilitation and complete replacement of those that can no longer be rehabilitated. In addition, consultancy services will be funded for condition assessments, feasibility studies, detailed engineering designs and construction supervision. The second component seeks to improve flood management and drainage operations. This involves the development and upgrade of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) asset management system, as well as the creation of technical standards and guidelines for flood risk management. Training will also be provided to staff from NDIA and other relevant agencies to operate and maintain the drainage system. The third component focuses on project management. Specialized consultancy services, goods and equipment will be funded for the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) to support management, coordination, financial administration, procurement, and environmental and social risk management. The project is expected to result in increased resilience of people to climate risks, improved urban living conditions, improved drainage/irrigation services, and a trained workforce to manage, operate and maintain drainage infrastructure.
