Generation, validation and dissemination of technologies for bean cultivation.

Fecha de inicio: 31/12/2020
Fecha de fin: 31/12/2023

Description

The main objective of the project is to improve the productivity and nutritional value of the bean crop by developing varieties that increase iron content, are tolerant to drought and disease, and are comparable in maturity to native varieties, in order to strengthen food sovereignty and security in Panama. Through the generation, validation and dissemination of these new varieties, the project aims not only to improve the living conditions of producers and their families in the intervention areas, but also to address specific problems such as wilting and water deficit that affect production. It is expected to release at least one variety with high iron content, another with higher yields and precocity similar to the Criollo varieties, and a third that is resistant to drought. In addition, the project envisages adapting chemical fertilization practices and producing significant quantities of high-quality seed. Direct beneficiaries include producer organizations and their families, who will benefit from nutritionally improved seeds that are better adapted to current climatic challenges, while consumers will indirectly benefit from products with higher nutritional value.
