Research-Innovation for the sustainability of agricultural activities in soils threatened by degradation and drought

Start Date: N/A
End Date: N/A

Description

This project in Panama focuses on improving the sustainability of production systems through the recovery of degraded soils, specifically in the areas of the Arco Seco and the Veragüense Savannah. Using pre-technological and technological technologies, the project will seek to generate information on soil microbiological biodiversity, evaluate the risk of heavy metals, and establish soil sustainability indexes to guide future recovery practices. Proposed solutions include sustainable pasture-legume management and silvopastoral systems, technologies to minimize erosion, and the use of organic amendments to improve the soil's ability to store carbon. In addition, extensive training and awareness-raising will be carried out for small and medium-scale producers, agricultural technicians and other key stakeholders. At the end of the project, these interventions are expected to contribute significantly to the environmental, economic and social sustainability of agriculture in the affected regions, directly and indirectly benefiting a wide range of stakeholders.
