Improving the competitiveness and sustainability of milk production systems in the Azuero Region

Fecha de inicio: 01/01/2020
Fecha de fin: 31/12/2023

Description

The project focuses on strengthening milk production in Panama, where 96% of dairies are small and medium-sized farms that face technological and management challenges. Although national production does not meet more than 40% of demand, milk is identified as one of the priority items because of its potential to improve competitiveness, food sovereignty and poverty reduction. This project seeks to develop various technologies and strategies to improve the quality and efficiency of milk production, including silage optimization, livestock health and reproductive management, and sustainable excreta management. In addition, a database will be created to evaluate forage production yields and costs, and an innovative farm model integrating these technologies will be developed. The project will directly benefit 200 farmers and 100 extension workers, and indirectly benefit more than 1,675 dairy farmers and agricultural students, thus boosting the supply of quality milk in the region.
