Bolivia's National Strategy for Forest and Climate Change (EN-BCC)

Start Date: 2010
End Date: N/A

Description

Bolivia's National Strategy for Forest and Climate Change (EN-BCC) establishes a framework to reduce the socioeconomic and ecological vulnerability of forest users and the Bolivian population to climate change by promoting integrated, community-based and sustainable forest management under the Living Well paradigm. The strategy is structured around six programs aimed at reducing threats to forests; conserving and restoring forests and degraded landscapes; strengthening livelihoods through integrated forest and watershed management; developing institutional capacities; adapting the legal and institutional framework; and improving monitoring and information on deforestation and forest degradation. Its intervention mechanisms include climate change mitigation and adaptation, forest governance, technology transfer, institutional and organizational capacity building, social participation and oversight, and financial mechanisms aimed at local populations.

Environment and Water Development Plan. Environmental Sector.
The Plan is derived from the Economic and Social Development Plan (PDES) 2021-2025 and is framed within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals and Nationally Determined Contributions. The Plan is a medium-term planning guiding document of the Ministry of Environment and Water that establishes the planning and management for the environmental and water resources sector in Bolivia. This document proposes five sectoral policies and 26 strategic guidelines: P1: Comprehensive and sustainable forest management with a focus on the social, community economy, and productive systems. Forests are food producers and protectors of environmental functions for Living Well. P2: Consolidate the comprehensive management and legal use of biodiversity and genetic resources, promoting the sustainable use of wild flora and fauna species and sanctioning their illegal management and trafficking, and the management of protected areas with the use of natural resources in balance and complementarity with livelihood systems.P3: Management of the National System of Protected Areas and utilization of natural resources in balance and complementarity with living systems. P4: Consolidate comprehensive environmental management to protect and conserve the environment and natural resources, as well as prevent and control negative environmental impacts, polluting chemicals, and hazardous waste on Mother Earth, ensuring the application of current regulations with the use of technical-legal tools and new technologies for the benefit of the national population so that they can live well in compliance with international conventions and treaties. P5: Consolidate the national policy and strategy to respond to new threats of climate change, assuming the provisions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in terms of managing and enhancing the opportunities offered by financial mechanisms and fulfilling established commitments.
Preserving cloud forests and puna grasslands in the Bolivian Andes
Conservation initiative aimed at protecting cloud forests and high-Andean puna grasslands from deforestation and degradation, through the legal designation of a municipal conservation area and coordinated management among the local government, conservation organizations and communities. It seeks to maintain the ecosystem services that sustain drinking water and irrigation supply and reduce flood risk.
Protecting 1.5 million hectares of watersheds in Bolivia
The creation of the Bajo Madidi Municipal Conservation and Management Area in Ixiamas protects 1,535,495 hectares of savannas, wetlands and tropical forests in northwestern Bolivia. The intervention conserves biodiversity, six rivers that are important to nearby communities and traditional economic practices, while restricting industrial logging and cattle ranching within the area. It was led by the Autonomous Municipal Government of Ixiamas with support from Conservation International-Bolivia and ACEAA, and financial backing from Andes Amazon Fund in partnership with the Wyss Campaign for Nature.
Protecting centuries-old forests in Bolivia
Initiative aimed at the long-term conservation of Amazon forests through the establishment and management of a municipal conservation area. It relies on community-based sustainable management of non-timber forest products, such as Brazil nuts and açaí, to provide a stable source of income that discourages deforestation, and on a management plan for the area that safeguards the water and fishery resources on which local communities depend.
