Convention on Biological Diversity

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international treaty whose main objective is the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity worldwide. It was adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and is one of the most important global environmental agreements. The CBD seeks to promote the conservation of biodiversity, the equitable utilization of genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits derived from their use. Through this convention, countries commit to adopt measures to protect ecosystems, species and genetic resources, as well as to promote international cooperation in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The CBD is a fundamental framework for decision-making and the implementation of biodiversity-related policies at the global level.
