Resolution 255/2026: Regulatory Framework for Genetically Modified Organisms for Agricultural, Agri-Food and Agro-Industrial Uses

Start Date: 10/04/2026
End Date: N/A

Description

Resolution 255/2026 of Argentina's Ministry of Economy updates the regulatory framework applicable to activities involving genetically modified organisms (GMOs), including derived products and by-products, intended for agricultural, agri-food and agro-industrial uses. The regulation requires prior authorization for the release of regulated GMOs into agroecosystems and establishes procedures for experimental activities and commercial authorization. Depending on the nature and proposed use of the GMO, commercialization may require environmental risk assessment, human and animal food safety assessment and an assessment of impacts on production and commercialization, with defined processing deadlines and the possibility of simultaneous evaluations. The regulation also establishes an optional Prior Consultation Procedure, coordination mechanisms among competent authorities, inspection and control measures, intervention of materials, permit revocation and other measures for non-compliance. It repeals Resolution 763/2011 and designates the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries as the enforcement authority.
