Ordering and transparency of the maize-tortilla chain in Mexico

Start Date: 01/12/2025
End Date: N/A

Description

Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development presents the new maize-tortilla chain as an operational line linked to the National Maize-Tortilla Agreement to order and increase transparency across each link of the chain. The source identifies problems such as price speculation, growing informality in tortilla sales, non-compliance with sanitary standards, irregular points of sale, and higher distribution costs. The proposed solutions include price and scale verification by Profeco, the creation of a working group to update NOM-187 on maize and wheat products, and technical studies to strengthen the chain and provide certainty to consumers.
