El Salvador's Plant and Animal Health Law establishes the fundamental provisions for the health protection of plants and animals, granting the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock competencies for diagnosis, epidemiological surveillance, quarantine control, registration of agricultural inputs and establishments. It creates the Plant and Animal Health Advisory Councils to strengthen coordination and advice to the MAG, and establishes mechanisms for the prevention, control, and eradication of pests and diseases. It contemplates procedures for the control of imports and exports, as well as for phytosanitary and zoosanitary certification, including a regime of infractions and sanctions to ensure compliance with legal provisions.
