Description

Law No. 8591 of Costa Rica is designed to develop, promote and encourage organic agricultural activity. It declares this activity of public interest due to its benefits for human, animal and plant health, and for the environment. Establishes a framework to strengthen the control and promotion mechanisms of organic products, also seeking the competitiveness and profitability of these products. Prioritizes the benefit of micro, small and medium-sized producers, gender equity, and environmental protection. The law defines what constitutes organic agricultural activity, differentiating it from conventional agriculture, and establishes specific rules for certification and transition to organic practices. It also encourages education and research in organic agriculture, establishes a framework for the marketing of organic products, and provides various tax and financial incentives to support organic producers. In addition, it promotes the use of native seeds and establishes strict measures against contamination by genetically modified organisms.
