Motivation

Forest and biodiversity conservation represent one of the most urgent challenges of our time in Latin America and the Caribbean, a region that is home to six of the 17 most megadiverse countries on the planet and provides approximately $24 trillion annually in ecosystem services. Faced with this reality, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) have developed a comprehensive mapping of public policies related to forest conservation and biodiversity in eleven strategic countries in the region: Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Honduras, Guyana, Mexico, Suriname, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela. This systematic mapping, which analyzes policy instruments implemented since 1990, reveals both significant progress and persistent challenges in the fight against deforestation, a phenomenon that has transformed between 66% and 72% of the tropical dry forest and 17% of the Amazon rainforest into landscapes dominated by human activity. The results of this collaborative research not only document the diverse national and subnational strategies adopted in the region but also identify opportunities for mutual learning and cross-border collaboration to strengthen existing regulatory frameworks and develop innovative approaches that balance environmental conservation as an essential component for the sustainable development of the agrifood systems.
