Motivation

The Regulation (2023/1115) on the placing on the Union market and export from the Union of certain commodities and products associated with deforestation and forest degradation, from now on EUDR, was adopted by the European Union (EU) Parliament on April 19, 2023. The EUDR regulation aims to ensure that products such as cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soybeans and timber traded in the EU do not contribute to deforestation and forest degradation, in line with the objectives of the European Green Pact, which seeks to promote environmental sustainability and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In order to be able to market such products in the EU and comply with EUDR requirements, importers must certify that the products are: i) deforestation-free, i.e. produced on land that has not been deforested after December 31, 2020; and ii) legally produced, in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of production. The purpose of this dialogue room is to follow up and disseminate the main initiatives, policy frameworks and resources focused on mitigating deforestation, in order to facilitate and accelerate compliance with the EUDR regulation by the countries of the Americas.
