Eight years after the United Nations set the goal of eradicating hunger by 2030, a succession of crises—COVID-19 and Ukraine—has wiped out the progress made, pushing the number of people suffering from hunger worldwide to a record 193 million in 2021—80 million more than in 2018. While these people are spread across more than 53 countries, the most severe cases are concentrated in Africa, where various factors—such as climate change, conflict, and political instability—converge, and where there is a heavy reliance on imported food.
