Description
Above-forecast rainfall in the incremental basin, the ITAIPU reservoir and the Yguazú River basin raised the level of the Paraná River, which could reach 121 meters above sea level on 14 October 2026. The rainfall led ITAIPU to open the second spillway channel in accordance with the hydroelectric plant's operating procedures. The discharged flow increased from 10,500 to 11,300 cubic meters per second. ITAIPU reported that it contributes to controlling the river flow through reservoir management, plant operations and continuous hydrometeorological monitoring. In Paraguay, approximately 170 families from the San Rafael neighborhood of Ciudad del Este had been evacuated, while Brazil's Civil Defense was monitoring the Yguazú and Paraná rivers and providing guidance in areas near the riverbanks.
