Official ENFEN Communiqué No. 18-2026: Coastal El Niño Could Extend Until the Autumn of 2027
Alert-notification
16/10/2026
Description
The Multisectoral ENFEN Commission maintains the Coastal El Niño Alert. It projects that sea warming off the Peruvian coast, in the Niño 1+2 region, will remain at an extraordinary magnitude until January 2027 and then decline to a strong magnitude through the beginning of the autumn of 2027. In the Niño 3.4 region, sea temperatures are expected to remain at a very strong magnitude until February 2027. The communiqué forecasts above-normal rainfall along the northern and central coast and in the northwestern highlands, changes in river flows, air temperatures well above normal values, and possible effects on crops. It also presents fisheries and reservoir water-availability outlooks. ENFEN urges decision-makers to consider risk scenarios, weather advisories and seasonal forecasts to reduce disaster risk and prepare for imminent hazards.
