ECLAC Warns About the Effects of an Extreme El Niño Event

ECLAC warns that an extreme El Niño event could cause a cumulative loss of at least 2% of Latin America and the Caribbean's GDP over three years and place up to 4.8 million additional people in poverty by the end of the decade. The probability of El Niño reaching very high intensity during 2026-2027 is above 90%, while the probability of a historic event is 69%. The press release examines risks to agriculture, fisheries, food security, energy and infrastructure and presents ten policy recommendations to strengthen regional anticipation, resilience and response capacity.
