Farmers in the US turn to perennial grains as a solution to extreme weather

In response to severe drought and other extreme weather affecting agricultural production in the United States, some farmers are incorporating perennial grains into their farming systems. The article highlights Kernza, a perennial grain developed from intermediate wheatgrass, whose deep root system can improve drought resilience, reduce soil erosion, support carbon storage and lower the need for fertilizers and heavy machinery. The article presents experiences from farmers and researchers in Kansas and notes that these technologies still face constraints related to lower yields, harvesting difficulties, underdeveloped markets and limited adoption.
