How Can Colombian Agriculture Prepare for the El Niño Event?

The Colombian Agricultural Institute presents preventive recommendations to help crop and livestock producers protect their crops, animals and livelihoods from high temperatures, reduced rainfall and pressure on water resources associated with the El Niño event. For the Caribbean region, it recommends reviewing water availability, conserving soil moisture, maintaining reservoirs and drinking facilities, and planning feed reserves for animals. In the Orinoquía, it advises optimizing water storage and use; in the Andean region, increasing the monitoring of strategic crops and using certified seeds; and in the Pacific and Amazon regions, strengthening prevention, protecting water sources and planning agricultural activities. The Institute also recommends monitoring crops and animals, promptly reporting pests and diseases, and implementing water protection, animal welfare and sanitary surveillance measures through the El Agro Actúa campaign.
