El Niño: FAO–WFP Joint Anticipatory Action Appeal, June 2026–March 2027

Joint appeal by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) to finance anticipatory action ahead of forecast El Niño impacts between June 2026 and March 2027. The document warns that strong El Niño conditions are developing and could threaten food security, agriculture and livelihoods across multiple regions. Drier conditions are expected in Southern Africa, Central America, parts of Asia and the Pacific, and parts of Eastern Africa, while flood and storm risks may intensify in the Horn of Africa and parts of Asia. FAO and WFP request USD 202 million to protect 8.8 million people through anticipatory action, with a current funding gap of USD 167 million to assist 7.6 million additional people. The appeal identifies 22 priority countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean, including Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras and Venezuela. Proposed actions include anticipatory cash transfers, seeds of drought-tolerant or flood-resistant varieties, livestock support, flood defenses, water storage systems, early warnings, agricultural assistance and measures to protect rural livelihoods before climate impacts escalate into humanitarian crises.
