Description

The study identifies a 9% increase in wildfire-affected areas and a 19% increase in forest degradation alerts during the 2023–2024 Amazon drought, with 4.2 million hectares affected by fire in 2024. The findings reveal an intensifying drought–fire–degradation feedback loop and call for integrated fire governance, enhanced early warning systems, ecosystem restoration, and stronger institutional coordination.
