Description

Scientific book chapter examining the contribution of agroforestry systems to soil organic carbon management and restoration, agricultural productivity, natural resource conservation, and climate change mitigation. It discusses international initiatives such as the Bonn Challenge, the 4 per 1000 initiative, the Koronivia workshops on agriculture, and the RECSOIL programme; addresses methods for monitoring and estimating soil carbon; and reviews agroforestry policies implemented in different countries, with particular attention to India's 2014 National Agroforestry Policy. The chapter highlights the need for policy, planning, incentives, research, institutional coordination, and the participation of farmers, governments, scientists, and other stakeholders to scale up agroforestry and strengthen soil health, ecosystem services, and sustainable development.
