Description
Central American countries, together with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Central American Agricultural Council (CAC), are promoting regional strategies to address the potential impacts of the El Niño phenomenon in 2026. Actions include strengthening early warning systems, interinstitutional coordination, technical exchange, and regional planning to reduce risks associated with droughts, water scarcity, and impacts on agricultural production and food security. The initiative seeks to increase the resilience of agri-food systems in the Central American Dry Corridor in response to extreme climate events, amid growing concerns over production losses, pressure on rural livelihoods, and effects on regional food supply. Regional cooperation is also highlighted as a key mechanism to improve countries’ response capacity and preparedness for climate-related risks.
