Renewable Energies: A just energy transition for sustainable development

La edición 2024 del Reporte de Economía y Desarrollo (RED) subraya la urgencia de avanzar hacia una transición energética justa desde la perspectiva de América Latina y el Caribe, considerando las realidades específicas de cada país y la necesidad de enfrentar rezagos históricos del desarrollo, como la brecha de PIB per cápita frente al mundo desarrollado y los persistentes niveles de pobreza y desigualdad. En materia de oferta energética, el informe destaca la importancia de ampliar la participación de las energías renovables en las matrices nacionales, sustituir combustibles fósiles por alternativas más limpias y aprovechar el rol transitorio que puede desempeñar el gas. En cuanto a la demanda, se enfatizan la eficiencia energética, los cambios en comportamientos y procesos industriales —incluidos los principios de economía circular—, la movilidad sostenible y la electrificación de consumos en hogares e industrias. Para el sector residencial, se resalta además la urgencia de mejorar el acceso a energía de calidad. The 2024 edition of the Economy and Development Report (RED) underscores the urgent need to advance a just energy transition from the perspective of Latin America and the Caribbean, considering the specific realities of each country and the need to address historical development gaps, such as the GDP per capita gap compared to the developed world and persistent levels of poverty and inequality. Regarding energy supply, the report highlights the importance of expanding the share of renewable energy in national energy mixes, replacing fossil fuels with cleaner alternatives, and leveraging the potential transitional role of natural gas. On the demand side, it emphasizes energy efficiency, changes in industrial behaviors and processes—including circular economy principles—sustainable mobility, and the electrification of energy consumption in homes and industries. For the residential sector, it also underscores the urgent need to improve access to quality energy. Finally, the report analyzes the macroeconomic challenges associated with this process and the opportunities for productive development that the energy transition opens up for the region, given its availability of resources and natural advantages.
