Description

This policy brief examines the role of voluntary sustainability standards (VSSs) in reducing deforestation and their integration with environmental provisions in international trade agreements. It analyzes the characteristics of VSSs operating in cocoa, palm oil, soybean, and timber sectors, evaluating their potential to prevent deforestation through design, implementation, and assurance criteria. The document explores innovative approaches such as the EFTA-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement that grants preferential tariff treatment to products meeting sustainability requirements, and examines due diligence mechanisms like FLEGT to combat illegal logging. It proposes policy options to strengthen synergies between VSSs and trade agreements, including sectoral dialogues, minimum certification requirements in trade treaties, and technical-financial support for producers in developing countries.
