Technical report
21/02/2024
Description
This report examines the experiences of five commodity-producing countries in the Global South (Costa Rica, Peru, Rwanda, Indonesia, and Gabon) in implementing measures to address deforestation and promote forest conservation. It analyzes different approaches including payments for ecosystem services, mandatory certification, national certification schemes, land use formalization, and forest landscape restoration strategies. The document identifies seven key lessons that can serve as starting points for governments seeking to preserve their forests and comply with emerging regulations targeting deforestation-free production. It provides detailed analysis of implementation, monitoring mechanisms, and results obtained by each country, highlighting the importance of combining multiple complementary measures, targeting interventions to high-risk areas, and establishing an enabling environment that includes strong institutional frameworks and both public and private financing.
