Live Fences in Tropical Production Systems: A Global Review of Uses and Perceptions
Technical report
01/06/2018
Description
This review analyzes the uses and perceptions of live fences in tropical agricultural systems across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Australia. Benefits include land demarcation, forage and fruit production, erosion control, and enhanced landscape connectivity. While many farmers recognize economic and ecological advantages, concerns such as high setup and maintenance costs remain. The study calls for further research on native species selection and productive impacts, particularly in tropical Australasia where data is lacking. It recommends policy initiatives and incentive programs to support wider adoption of live fences.
