Characterization of the meat and milk production chain in livestock in Honduras
01/07/2016
Description
Within the framework of the Productive Landscapes Project (Mi Ambiente), the commercialization of sustainable milk and meat in Honduras is promoted through silvopastoral systems and good practices, seeking greater productivity, conservation of biodiversity and improvement of livestock livelihoods. The resource presents an analysis of the milk and meat value chains (actors, links, relationships, costs and margins) based on documentary review, surveys and participatory workshops in Yoro, Olancho and Choluteca, identifying opportunities, limitations and a strategy to overcome bottlenecks. In both chains, the production link is the most limited (high costs, dependence on inputs, drought, lack of technical assistance and low organization), with a strong presence of intermediaries and weakened state support capacities. There is an openness of producers to sustainable practices, conditioned by a favorable cost-benefit ratio.
