Description
This paper presents an analysis of the dairy value chain in the Dominican Republic according to the methodology for strengthening value chains (Oddone, Padilla, & Antunes, 2014). The main links in the chain are described, as well as the characteristics of their actors, the links between them and the constraints they face in meeting domestic demand. It is proposed to encourage the incorporation of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, and to improve the quality of products. The complexity of the relationships between the links and the governance scheme are widely studied in order to facilitate the overall scaling of the chain. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) proposes five programs to overcome obstacles: a) chain governance; b) support for sustainable and competitive dairy farming; (c) protection of the quality of milk and milk products; d) promotion of the added value of milk, and e) promotion of the consumption of milk and derivatives and incentives for domestic consumption.
