Global food systems transitions have enabled affordable diets but had less favourable outcomes for nutrition, environmental health, inclusion and equity

Over the past 50 years, global food systems have transitioned from rural to industrial, impacting diets, health, livelihoods and the environment. A comparative analysis of countries at different stages of this transition reveals that, although the affordability of nutritious diets improved, no current food system achieves optimal nutrition, sustainability and equity outcomes. Six case studies are presented to illustrate trends and challenges in the quest for sustainable food systems.
