This paper presents some key development challenges currently facing regional agriculture and suggests a framework and actions to effectively transform the sector, within the preparatory process for the United Nations Food Systems Summit held at the end of 2021. It addresses the need for an integrated approach that emphasizes orienting regional agriculture towards increasing its contribution to GDP; the role of agriculture in promoting a healthy population in the region; technology and innovation as essential components of agricultural strategies; the effective linking of regional agriculture with tourism; and ensuring the adoption of newer and more climate-sensitive approaches in regional agriculture.
