Description

Agriculture is key to the economic and social development of the Andean countries, as it contributes to food security and inclusive and sustainable growth. Despite crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector has demonstrated its resilience and economic potential. Today, it offers opportunities for productive diversification, social inclusion and meeting climate goals. As this book argues, this is possible through sustainable production models that reduce deforestation, optimize water use and generate socioeconomic and environmental benefits that outweigh their costs. To take advantage of these opportunities, it is essential to overcome structural challenges such as low productivity, lack of infrastructure and the need to adjust priorities in the face of climate change. Gender equity and the empowerment of women in agriculture must also be promoted. Connecting the agricultural sector with new economic opportunities is a priority in the region. Developing value chains will make it possible to improve productivity, generate employment, strengthen the export sector and promote well-being in rural areas. A commitment to agriculture is a win-win strategy that requires immediate action.
