Description
Climate change in Latin America and the Caribbean is intensifying extreme weather events, such as fires, hurricanes and extreme rainfall. In 2020, the Pantanal suffered its worst fire season and the Atlantic recorded a record number of storms. Hurricanes Eta and Iota will affect more than 8 million people in Central America, causing millions in damage. Honduras loses 2.3% of its annual GDP due to climate impacts. Between 2000 and 2019, five Caribbean countries were among the 20 most affected in deaths per capita and eight in economic losses. With a global increase of 1.5°C, floods could affect up to 400% more people in some countries. Climate shocks reduce the income of the poorest 40%, more than double the regional average and could push 2.4–5.8 million people into extreme poverty by 2030.
